Autopsies will be conducted Tuesday on the bodies of a Newfoundland doctor facing extradition to the United States and her infant son.

Police in St. John's say Dr. Shirley Turner's body was discovered on a beach outside the city Monday evening. A short time later, police and coast guard officials found the body of her 13-month-old son Zachary, about 20 metres away.

A couple visiting from Ontario found Turner's body during a walk on the beach.

Police have not established a cause of death but have not ruled out foul play. Autopsies will be performed Tuesday.

Turner's lawyer says he's shocked by his client's death. He said he was supposed to meet with her Monday to discuss her extradition to face charges in the murder of Dr. Andrew Bagby. His body was discovered in a state park north of Pittsburgh in Nov. 2001. He had been shot five times.

Last fall, the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador ruled that Turner could be extradited to the U.S. to face the murder charges.

The extradition was approved by the federal Justice Department in June.

Turner had been appealing the extradition.
