Security officials wrestled two people to the ground after they threw cream pies at Quebec Liberal Leader Jean Charest during a campaign stop Saturday.

Charest was walking through a small crowd of people in Labelle riding north of Montreal when a cream pie struck him on the side of his face.

As officials moved to apprehend the man, a woman holding a pie approached Charest's wife, Michèle Dionne. The pie splattered on Dionne's clothes.

Charest wiped the cream from his face and continued campaigning, holding a microphone to address supporters.

Two men and two women were taken into custody and then released. Police were investigating, and it wasn't clear Saturday night whether charges would be laid.

"We represent no political party," said a man with a red clown nose, who spoke on behalf of the pie throwers.

Quebec voters will cast their ballots on Monday. The latest polls have Charest's Liberals in first place. On Friday, Premier Bernard Landry said it would be foolish for people to vote out his government solely for the sake of change.
