More than 57,000 people don't have power in their homes or businesses in eastern New Brunswick after a winter storm brought down power lines on Sunday.

There's no guarantee power will be restored before Tuesday, even though crews from Nova Scotia have joined those from New Brunswick Power.

High winds and snow were continuing to knock the lines down.

Moncton was the hardest-hit area, with about 20,000 households in the dark. People in the city are being asked to conserve water because the Turtle Creek reservoir is operating at only half capacity.

Driving is poor on the slushy highways and many schools are closed.

The storm has also caused scattered outages in Nova Scotia.
