Prime Minister Jean Chrétien says the federal government will create 10 new national parks and five marine conservation areas.

He told reporters he wanted to "preserve the magnificent places in Canada for future generations" after announcing the plan at the United Nations meeting in Johannesburg Monday.

Negotiations to create some parks are already well advanced, said Monte Hummel, president of the World Wildlife Fund Canada.

He suggested the new parks might be located in
  • B.C.'s Gulf Islands near Vancouver

  • the Queen Charlotte Islands, off the northern part of B.C.'s coast

  • Wager Bay, or Ukkusiksalik, on the west coast of Hudson Bay in Nunavut

  • the Torngat Mountains in Labrador's northernmost tip

  • the north shore of Lake Superior in Ontario

The Gwaii Haanas National Park reserve is already established in the southern tip of the Queen Charlotte Islands, and land has been set aside for the Torngat Mountain and Ukkusiksalik parks.

For Chrétien, creating the parks would complete a project he began when he established 10 national parks as minister of Indian affairs and northern development 30 years ago.

Hummel called it "a terrific commitment," adding "... it appears to me to be a legacy-building exercise for the prime minister."
