A man accused of going on a rampage was arraigned Wednesday on four counts of first-degree murder, and one count of attempted murder.

Magloire Poissant, 56, was arrested Saturday evening after police found a woman, two of her teenage sons, and one of their friends dead in a burning house in Lavaltrie, Quebec, 40 kilometres northeast of Montreal.

The arraignment took place in a Joliette hospital, where Poissant has been since Saturday for treatment of minor injuries.

Poissant's lawyer asked for a court order to have his client transferred to Montreal's Pinel Institute for a psychiatric evaluation.

The examination will determine if Poissant is mentally fit to stand trial and had the capacity to form the intent to kill.

One teenage victim survived the attack, despite a gunshot wound to the head. Police have interviewed him, and say he has told them what happened.

A handgun was found at the scene.

Poissant will be back in court Feb. 4.
