Conrad Black, who gave up his Canadian citizenship for the honour of a peerage, was officially inducted into the British House of Lords on Wednesday.

Black, 56, was escorted into the august House of Lords and after a brief ceremony and swearing-in, he became Lord Black of Crossharbour.

Crossharbour is the name of a neighbourhood as well as a subway stop on the Docklands light railway, near the Daily Telegraph building. Black owns the newspaper.

Black decided to renounce his Canadian citizenship after Prime Minister Jean Chrétien would not allow him to hold a British title. Black has been living in England for 12 years.

The other newcomer to the House of Lords was Baroness Michie of Gallanbach.

After the swearing-in, the two new peers walked around the House shaking hands with the other Lords.
