Swarms of tiny flying insects called aphids descended on parts of southern Ontario Thursday afternoon.
The bugs didn't bite, but it made for an uncomfortable commute home for many people.
Pedestrians in downtown Toronto were forced to swat their way through the green clouds, and bike riders found themselves covered from head to toe.
The infestation affected communities around the city including Brantford, about 100 kilometres away.
Aphids, also known as plant lice, live on plants and trees, but grow wings when it's time to migrate. Experts aren't sure why the bugs decided to take flight Thursday.
Chris Darling, a curator of insects at the Royal Ontario Museum, says it's an unusual phenomenon. He told the Canadian Press that the bugs may have sensed a change in the barometric pressure caused by a storm that was moving in at the time.
Most of the bugs disappeared later in the evening.
