Canadian Alliance members of Parliament are renewing their calls for Hedy Fry to be tossed from cabinet after an access to information request turned up no letter from the mayor of Prince George, B.C.

The minister of state for multiculturalism told the House of Commons in March that she had been told in a letter that the British Columbia city was the site of cross burnings.

At the time, the opposition said she had fabricated her story and demanded she produce the letter or be turfed from cabinet.

When reporters requested to see the letter, Fry said she would show it.

She never did, so CBC Radio filed a request with the access to information commissioner – who turned up nothing.

The mayor of Prince George has said all along that no such letter was ever sent to Fry.

When presented with the results of the information request, Fry had no explanation.

"I think I answered most of those questions and I have nothing further to add," she said. "Whatever the access to information commissioner has to say is something that he has to do.

"He is independent of us, so I can't comment on his statements."

Shortly after her remarks in March, Fry made an apology, which Prime Minister Jean Chrétien accepted.

But the Alliance didn't, calling on the prime minister to kick her out of cabinet. With this latest news, they are standing by that demand.
