Lingerie retailer Victoria's Secret has applied for a patent for pantyhose that it claims can treat cellulite and leave legs slimmer.

Cellulite, the "cottage cheese" look much despised by most women, is a fatty deposit that some women develop beneath their skin, often on their buttocks and thighs.

According to The New Scientist, the patent covers a treatment for cellulite using "hose material that is worn tightly on the skin." The hose are treated with a compound called theophylline acetate (THA). The THA is doped with silantriol, a silica-based compound which Victoria's Secret says has been shown to "increase the penetration of certain chemical compounds that are not easily passed into the skin".

(THA) has previously been administered orally to treat bronchial disorders such as asthma. How the chemical breaks down cellulite is the lingerie retailer's own little secret.

To work, the patent says, the tights must be worn for at least three eight-hour days. Washing the tights will not affect the chemicals.

The patent was filed in Europe by the Ohio-based retailer but so far the company has refused to confirm whether or not it intends to launch a product using the technology.
