A man has pleaded guilty to pushing a 23-year-old woman in front of a Toronto subway train last year.

Herbert Cheong pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He was initially charged with first-degree murder.

Charlene Minkowski, a law clerk, was struck by the train and killed. Her death was followed by several similar incidents, though hers was the only fatality.

The court heard that Cheong has schizophrenia, and had spent a quarter of an hour on a subway platform before randomly picking Minkowski to be his victim.

Cheong will be sentenced December 9. The Crown wants him to serve at least 15 years in prison before being eligible for parole.
