Sonny Bono died last night in a skiing accident in Nevada. He first became famous when he was half of the duo, Sonny and Cher. Later in his career he was mayor of Palm Springs and then became a U.S. congressman.

He died last night after he slammed into a tree while skiing alone.

A similar accident last week took the life of Michael Kennedy, the son of former Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and the brother of Rep. Joe Kennedy.

Bono rose to fame in the 1960s as a singing star and TV variety show host with his former wife, Cher. Their big hits were I Got You, Babe and The Beat Goes On.

He got into politics as mayor of Palm Springs, from 1988 to 1992. He was first elected to Congress in 1994 as a Republican.

House Speaker New Gingrich said Bono, who was 62, was a funny man whose humour masked a sharp and serious mind.
