The circus is not coming to town. Late Monday afternoon, St. John's City Council voted not to give a license to the George Carden International Circus.

The Circus had booked Memorial Stadium for the 23rd and 24th of June. But at the city council meeting on Monday afternoon, the SPCA showed Council members a videotape prepared by the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies. Among other things, it showed how circus animals are trained by being 'broken' and treated harshly.

Having viewed 'The Plight of Performing Animals', Council cracked a whip of its own. They said no to the circus.

Meanwhile, it looks like the George Carden circus will be performing in Mount Pearl.
