Kindergarten students will spend an entire day in the classroom if an NDP government is elected.
The party is promising to phase in full-day kindergarten over a four year term — an $84 million commitment it says would improve literacy, narrow the gap between children from different socio-economic backgrounds, and help working parents with child care.
Saskatchewan would not be the first province to make this move. All kindergarten students in British Columbia and Prince Edward Island are enrolled in full-day kindergarten, while Ontario plans to make it available for all students by 2015.
The NDP says it would also restore 350 education assistant jobs that have been cut since 2008, as school boards and the province changed the way they provide support to special needs students.
It says that will cost $24 million.
The election is Nov. 7.
