One of Radio Canada's best known journalists is quitting amid controversy.

Robert-Guy Scully came under fire over the past month when it was revealed his production company was receiving millions of dollars from the federal government. Robert Guy Scully made a two and a half minute statement via satellite from Rome, Italy.

He said it was the most painful thing he's ever had to do in front of a camera.

Scully said for 30 years, he's been a journalist of quality and integrity.

He says he never submitted to influence from anyone. Scully also lashed out at his critics, saying those who demanded his resignation used exaggerated language to advance political causes. Scully says his only quarrel was with his fellow journalists, but that those differences are over now.

Scully says he will continue to work in television, just not as a journalist.
