The Saskatoon Tribal Council wants to become involved in a plan for a recreation centre in the city's core neighbourhoods.

The idea comes up at council tonight.

Chief Felix Thomas says he believes thousands of adults would use it.

'A lot of our people can't get to the Field House, for a variety of reasons.' - Chief Felix Thomas

"As you know, a lot of our people can't get to the Field House, for a variety of reasons. But if there's one in their neighbourhood, I think they'd be able to get to it and be more comfortable in using it," he said in an interview.

"The one thing we all want to do is make sure that any rec centre, any civic facilities are inclusive of the demographics and the population of the area."

City is committed to idea

The tribal council already manages the White Buffalo Youth Lodge.

The YMCA is also interested in an inner-city facility, and the city has made it a priority to build such a centre. It wants to build it by 2017.
