The Saskatoon Health Region posted a surplus in 2013, despite initial forecasts of a large deficit.

The region had predicted a deficit of $34 million.

"It's been hard work," says Vice-President of Finance and Corporate Services Nilesh Kavia. "And it's been hard work not only for the leaders here, but also for our management team, and for the staff."

The region found savings in reducing the amount of overtime paid to staff, as well as savings in changing suppliers.

Kavia says there is still work to do. The region has a total debt of $65 million dollars, accumulated over many years.

Meanwhile, the Regina Qu'appelle Health Region is still posting a deficit of $2.5 million.
