Skye Stoney thought he'd left his violent past behind him.
The onetime Saskatoon gang member — he's banned for life from having any kind of firearm — moved to Vancouver after his last jail stint to pursue a career in music.
Last week, he returned to Saskatoon as a part the Joey Stylez "Feather and Rosary" tour.
Staring down the barrel of a gun
It was on the stage at the Rock Bottom bar on Broadway Avenue that, once again, he found himself staring down the
"Then I witnessed one of them whip out a shotgun out of his pants and he was aiming it at me," Stoney said. "I could tell, I didn't want to go towards them, I've been shot before, I've been stabbed before."
Stoney was nearing the end of his set when four men at the front of stage started a commotion. Sources tell CBC that

"I proceeded to finish doing my song and then I heard them say, 'shoot him, just kill him,'" Stoney said. "I was scared, I didn't know what to do. They proceeded to start flipping speakers, and then one of them jumped onstage. I didn't know what to do so I just swung at him, I buckled him."
Stoney said he jumped into the crowd to protect his friends. That's when one of the men pulled out a canister of bear mace and sprayed the stage, and everyone near him.
"I got bear-maced in the face — my face looks like a burnt hot wing. I was trying to protect all my friends. In the melee, one of my friends almost lost his life," he said.
Victim in critical condition
A 33-year-old man was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He's now in critical but stable condition.
Yesterday, a 19-year-old man appeared in court charged with a variety firearm charges. He'll be back in court this morning for a bail hearing.
Stoney is at a loss to find a clear motive for the attack.
"I don't know," he said. "I was born and raised in Saskatoon, I've done time in all the correctional facilities, I've been segregated as a gang member along with all of them and I don't know. Maybe jealousy? Maybe envy? I have no clue."
The brawl prompted Stylez to remove Stoney from the tour. Stoney said he's heading back to try and process what's happened and re-evaluate his musical career.
