A Great Horned Owl could be responsible for as many as five attacks on small dogs in the small town of Aberdeen, 40 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.

On March 4, an owl attacked and killed Rusty, a three-pound Japanese Chin-Chihuahua mix inside a family's yard.

"He tried taking off with Rusty, and my husband had to throw his boot at it," said Casey Schoffer. "And that same owl, the next morning, attacked another dog in town."

Schoffer says losing the family pet has been hard on her children.

"They heard all the barking, so my oldest, he's pretty upset," she said. "And my other little dog, she's a girl so they were joined at the hip. So, she was in distress about it."

Schoffer says she's heard of five attacks by owls on small dogs in the last week.

While she wanted something done about the issue before this, she believes the bird has moved on.

"I don't think it's around anymore," she said. "I think it was attacking because it was so cold, and looking for food."

It's still not clear what caused the bird to attack.
