There was a huge spike in the number of nuisance mosquitoes in Saskatoon.

Five traps caught 1,000 mosquitoes last week. This week, the traps caught 10,000.

"A lot of that has been due to the heat," parks branch manager Wayne Briant said.

Three mosquitoes that can carry the West Nile Virus were trapped, but they were not infected. That's a small number, so West Nile is not an issue right now, Briant said.

Peak season for the mosquitoes that can carry West Nile is the last two weeks of July and the first two of August.
