Former U of S President Ilene Busch-Vishniac will return to the university later this month as a professor.
A noted expert in acoustics, Busch-Vishniac will be teaching in the Mechanical Engineering program.
Busch-Vishniac was fired by the university's board of governors last month. The move came after a decision was made to end the tenure of a professor, Robert Buckingham, who publicly criticized the university's restructuring plan, TransformUS.
While the professor was soon returned to his teaching duties, the move made national headlines, and raised questions about academic freedom, and whether deans of schools should be able to speak against official policy.
Eventually, the board said it felt that it would be easier to rebuild the school's reputation under new leadership.
According to her biography, Busch-Vishniac has worked at a number of universities, including the University of Texas (Austin), McMaster University and Johns Hopkins University.
