A number of calls went to Saskatoon's fire department, after flames east of the city shot into the air around 6 a.m. CST.

They lit up the early morning sky east of the city. A number of fire crews and police cruisers were dispatched to investigate a gas line three kilometres east of the city.

TransGas says the flames are part of a controlled flare at one of its natural gas installations. They are visible from several kilometres away, but the company says it is a deliberate burn. It says no one's safety is at risk.
