Cell phones keep Saskatchewan 9-1-1 operators busy

Operators at the RCMP call centre say cell phones are increasing their workload.

RCMP call centre reports volume up over five years

Emergency operators at the RCMP call centre say the phones are ringing now more than ever.

The reason — cell phones.

"Everybody nowadays has a cell phone," said Angela Prettyshield, an RCMP 9-1-1 operator. "Everybody from the six-year-old kid to the 80-year-old person,"

"Everybody has a cellphone, so that's increased our workload."

Prettyshield has worked as an operator for the past 17 years and said there's been a marked increase in calls over the past five years.

Operators are also seeing a number of calls about harassment through text messages and social media sites like Facebook.
