Beauty Inside Out

It's finally summer and that means a whole new round of exhibits opening up at the Mendel Art Gallery.

Emily Carr

A darker look into the impact of Emily Carr's work. (mendel.ca)

This weekend, you can see the works of many international and local artists, including a featured exhibit by one of Canada's most influential painters, Emily Carr.

'Convoluted Beauty: In The Company of Emily Carr' features work by Carr herself, as well as other artists who have been influenced by her.

This exhibit delves into a dark period in Carr's career and deals with issues of hospitalization and hysteria.

On Thursday night, there will be a special tribute by German painter and performance artist Thomas Zipp. This is experimental sound and should be very edgy.

On Friday, there will be a special talk and tour of the gallery with artists.

That's at the Mendel this weekend until September.

Comedic Classic

The Saskatoon Summer Players are getting ready to set sail and they want you to come aboard.

HMS Pinafore

A musical comedy of forbidden love as the Saskatoon Summer Players present HMS Pinafore. (Tim Yaworski)

This is a modern update of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic H.M.S. Pinafore.

The story has been rejigged to have more modern political references but the basic plot remains. The captain's daughter falls in love with a lowly sailor, far below her own class and the power struggle ensues. There's plenty of dancing and song to boot.

H.M.S. Pinafore opens Friday night and runs until July 6 at Persephone Theatre.
