Saskatoon police say a 31-year-old man held five people hostage in a barricaded home on the west side this morning.

Officers used a Taser to subdue the man after a five-hour stand-off. The five hostages made it out safely.

It all started with a weapons call at 3:00 a.m. CST. Officers were sent to the home at 205 Avenue J South after reports of a man going into the house with weapons.

Officers closed off a three-block perimeter around the home, restricting foot and vehicle traffic. The police plane circled the area through the entire incident.

There were six people, including the suspect, in the home. The man had barricaded the door and refused to let the others leave, threatening violence.

A little more than an hour before police were able to take him into custody there was the sound of breaking glass, and then a loud bang came from the back of the home. Emergency Response Team members knocked down shrubs that were obscuring their view, before smashing down the front door.

Police had parked their "BearCat" armoured vehicle on the front lawn of the home, its nose less than five-metres from the barricaded door. It used a spotlight to illuminate the house.

Just after 7:00 a.m. CST, a man and two women made it out of the house safely. The armed suspect, a woman and another man remained inside.

"Officers determined that negotiations were not successful in ending the incident," police said in a news release.

"Due to the possibility of the man being in possession of firearms and threatening harm, a Conducted Energy Weapon was deployed."

Police are still at the scene. They've gotten a search warrant and are bagging evidence at the scene.
