Alexander Levin is going to jail for 15 months after pleading guilty to taking off with the daughter he fathered with his Brazilian mistress.
The case of the 47-year-old married Saskatoon man made headlines on three continents.
The story began when Levin, who has a wife and four children in Saskatoon, met Oziene Barbosa on Facebook. He eventually travelled to Brazil and got her pregnant.
Last year, he convinced Barbosa to travel to Ukraine with their little girl. While there, he abandoned her and then fled to the Phillipines with the child. His route there included stops in Bulgaria, Turkey and Dubai.
Barbosa made her way back to Brazil and alerted the authorities. Levin was arrested in Saskatoon.
Levin fired his lawyer early in the court proceedings and then went on to represent himself.
His court appearances were marked by spontaneous ramblings directed at judges, prosecutors, deputies and reporters in the gallery.
At his sentencing hearing, he read a 79-page speech that took two hours to complete. It included commentary on everything from his views on Brazilians to his thoughts on the Canadian justice system.
After Levin's arrest, Barbosa was reunited with her daughter.
