A 21-year-old woman died in hospital early Saturday, about five hours after being rushed to the emergency room with a gunshot wound to the head, Regina police said.

The woman, whose name was not released, was the city's third homicide victim of 2010, police said.

Police were called at 3:46 a.m. CST about a shooting in the city's north-central neighbourhood. Officers and EMS rushed to the backyard of a home in the 1400 block of Garnet Street where they found the wounded woman.

She was taken to hospital where she died just before 9 a.m.

Another shooting 12 blocks away

Police said the Garnet Street shooting was one of two firearms incidents Saturday morning, and they were not sure if the two cases were related.

The other shooting took place about a kilometre away, in the 1100 block of Wascana Street. It was reported to police at 4:06 a.m. CST.

A 21-year-old man was shot on the street in front of a house, police said, and taken to hospital in serious condition.

"Both investigations are active and ongoing," police said in a news release. "There is nothing to indicate a connection between these two incidents. However, this is something our investigators will be looking into."
