The University of Regina has improved its standing with Maclean's Magazine's latest survey of Canadian universities. (CBC)

The University of Regina has improved its rating a bit in Maclean's Magazine's annual survey of top schools, but the University of Saskatchewan has taken a tumble.

According to the survey, which was released Thursday, the U of S fell from 9th place to 12th in the category of universities with medical schools. That puts it in the bottom third of 15 schools.

It's the latest bit of bad news for the U of S, whose medical school was put on probation by an accrediting body a few weeks ago.

The U of R, meanwhile, improved slightly but remains in the middle of the pack among comprehensive universities (those that offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees).

Last year, it was 9th of 15 schools in its category. This year, it's in 8th place. 

The study compares numerous factors, including average entering grades, class sizes and graduation rates.
