Costa Maragos, the face of CBC television in Saskatchewan for over two decades, is set to retire at the end of March.

Maragos has been with CBC for 31 years and has been an anchor for the supper hour television newscast for 23 years.

His final broadcast will be on March 28.

"I've been lucky to hold down one of the best jobs in broadcast journalism in Saskatchewan, my home province," Maragos said, as part of the announcement of his plans.

"The greatest honour for me has been the recognition of my work in the studio, our newscasts and in the field for my documentaries. I've had the chance to do pretty well everything I've wanted to do in this business from radio to TV. It's been fun."

Maragos began his CBC career in Prince Rupert, B.C., in 1982 as a radio host. In 1984 he moved to Windsor, Ont., where he hosted the morning radio show. He went on to a position as network news reader in Toronto.

He returned to Regina, where he grew up, in 1990.

Maragos was a member of the production team that won a Gemini Award in 2011 for Best Local Newscast.

He also produced two Gemini Award nominated documentaries, Football First: The Roy Shivers Story, about the former general manager of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and The Runner, the story of Ted Jaleta and his amazing journey from refugee camps to a new life in Regina.

"Costa is an iconic figure on the Saskatchewan broadcast scene," John Agnew, Managing Director of CBC Saskatchewan, said Monday. "In addition to being an excellent anchor, behind the scenes he has taken the time to mentor and coach many of our up-and-coming journalists, produced award-winning documentaries and took an active role in the production of the show. He is an admirable combination of talent and experience."

Maragos also spent considerable time in the community as an MC for public events.

"I have had a long and satisfying career. I am a cancer survivor so I know how short life can be and I'd like to try something else while I still have the opportunity," Costa said.
