It seems nothing can slow down the Saskatoon Blades these days.
The hottest junior hockey team in Canada extended its winning streak to 18 games on Friday night with a 4-1 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings.
The Blades got goals from Shane McColgan, Nick Zajac, Brenden Walker, and Josh Nicholls. Nicholls now has 41 goals this season, a career-high, which put him third in the WHL.
It was also a milestone win for Blades head coach and general manager Lorne Molleken. Molleken became the second coach in league history to record 600 career wins.
Jack Brodsky, owner and governor of the Blades, said the winning streak is having a big impact.
"When you have people in the building, they buy 50-50 tickets — it supports our education fund — they buy merchandise," Brodsky said. "When people are coming to the building it means good things for the hockey club and for the building and for the community."
The Blades are now six games away from the longest winning streak in WHL history. The WHL record is 24 straight wins, set by the Victoria Cougars in 1981.
Saskatoon is looking to extend the streak to 19 wins on Sunday. The team will travel to Moose Jaw to take on the Warriors.
