Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall is weighing in on a proposal to drastically increase motorcycle insurance rates in his province.

Wall said via Twitter on Friday that the province is considering asking Saskatchewan Government Insurance to reconsider its recent rate proposal.

"We are considering having SGI take another look at this," Wall said in a tweet.

A few minutes later, he told CBC's Blue Sky that he and other MLAs have been hearing from the public about the proposals, and it would be discussed when the spring sitting of the legislature begins next week.

"It's a very, very significant increase for the owners of certain motorcycles," Wall said.

SGI has proposed an average increase of 73 per cent for riders, which could force some to pay more than $4,000 a year for insurance.

In some situations, particularly in the case of larger, older motorcycles, insurance rates would triple.

The company says injury claims tend to be much higher for motorcycle users. If the rates aren't rebalanced, other drivers will essentially be subsidizing them, the argument goes.

The new rate proposal prompted a furious reaction from many motorcycle enthusiasts, a number of whom contacted SGI and politicians to complain.
