Reported collisions up by 10,000 this winter, SGI says

Collision statistics from SGI for the winter months of November, December and January, show a big jump this season.
Car crashes are up dramatically this winter according to Saskatchewan's automobile insurance company SGI.
According to the statistics, there were 10,000 more collision claims in the three winter months of 2012-2013, compared to the same three months (November, December and January) of a year ago.
This winter, SGI received 41,367 claims. Last winter, it had 30,942 claims.
While driving conditions, including snow storms and icy roads, were a factor, officials note motorists can reduce their risk.
"The thing we always say is to slow down and to drive for the road conditions," Kim Hambleton, a spokeswoman for SGI, said Thursday. "The posted speed limit is the speed limit for ideal road conditions which we almost never have in the winter."
Hambleton added the exceptional number of claims may not lead to increased insurance rates, because the calculation is based on several years of claims.
