Buy crop insurance, Sask. farmers urged

Many farmers buy crop insurance to protect against flooding, as shown here in this aerial view of the Yorkton area in 2010. (Canadian Press)With a big melt coming in the weeks ahead, Saskatchewan farmers are being encouraged to take out crop insurance in case of flooding.
The government released details of the 2013 crop insurance program Monday, saying the overall budget will be $198 million.
In terms of flood protection, crop insurance will continue its coverage of up to $100 per unseeded acre.
Officials are reminding farmers they should get insurance because there won't be any "ad hoc" programs for weather-related disasters this year.
The coverage available to farmers has almost doubled since 2007 and is now at an average $194 per acre, up from $172 from 2012, provincial Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart said.
