A church hall in Saskatoon's Pleasant Hill neighbourhood is set to become a multi-use community centre.

Members of city council approved a rezoning request for St. George's on Monday night.

That clears the way for the Kinsmen Club to buy the building and expand it.

Curtis Kimpton, a co-chair on the project, told CBC News Tuesday that community groups had outgrown their existing location.

"We had already been contacted by many groups that are leaving the YWCA's community village. There's just not enough space for everyone there," Kimpton said. "So we need more of that in Saskatoon."

The plan for the expanded hall includes a daycare and several education and arts groups.

The Kinsmen still have to raise about $9 million for the project.

They hope to start construction in 2014.
