The City of Regina is looking for federal money to contribute to a $224 million upgrade of its sewage treatment plant.

Mayor Michael Fougere said Friday the city is asking Ottawa to contribute $50 million.

The city will pay for much of the total bill.

Last year, the city said it wanted to borrow around $150 million. It previously approved a series of annual 9 per cent hike water and sewer rate hikes.

It also wants to involve the private sector in a so-called P3 — public-private partnership — financing arrangement.

Fougere said the city must proceed with the project to replace its existing aging wastewaster plant, protect the health and safety of residents and meet new provincial and federal regulations.

The plan is to start building next year and complete the project by the end of 2016 when the new regulations take effect. The city's executive committee votes on the plan next Wednesday.
