A Saskatoon woman and her disabled daughter will not be deported after all, officials have decided.

Reka Kincses and her 22-year-old daughter Boglarka, who has cerebral palsy, were facing a federal hearing Tuesday morning.

However, the federal government has halted deportation proceedings, the family said.

"I'm really happy. I cannot explain what I'm thinking," Kincses said Tuesday. "The Canadian people are really good people and warm hearted, warm hearted people. I was really surprised because they are very focused on people in need."

Federal officials planned to deport the young woman to Romania out of concern her condition would place a burden on the health care system.

However, the provincial government intervened and said it wasn't worried about that.

Kincses said letters from the province, and some 200 others, likely helped federal officials understand the situation.

"Maybe if they couldn't understand it before they have a better understanding ... now about cerebral palsy," she said. "Cerebral palsy is not a disease."

What's next is for Kincses's permanent residency application to be approved. She's been waiting about three years for that.

Kincses arrived in Canada under a provincial immigration program. The woman and her daughter have been in Saskatoon since 2009.

Her lawyer is optimistic the matter will be resolved in the next few weeks.

Kincses is hoping to open a care home.

"I would like to make true my dream, to open up my care home and have my daughter on the side, while I'm working," she said.
