In May, Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon will be home to the Memorial Cup, Canada's major junior hockey championship.
And some big names in hockey were in Saskatoon for the Blades' game on Wednesday night.
The commissioners for all three participating leagues - Western Hockey League (WHL), Ontario Hockey League (OHL), and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) - were in Saskatoon to see if the city is ready for this spring's tournament.
Ron Robison, WHL commissioner, said he is very impressed with what Saskatoon has to offer.
"First of all, the facilities are outstanding," Robison said. "When you're talking about this venue here, Credit Union Centre, [it is] arguably one of the best facilities for junior hockey in Canada. When you look at the hotels available for the teams, they're outstanding."
Following a slow start to the WHL season, some hockey fans are questioning whether the Blades should be hosting the Memorial Cup. Saskatoon is currently in seventh place in the WHL standings.
"We'd never consider that," Robison said. "This community is known for its strength in volunteers and its experience in organizing events of this magnitude. It's one of the main reasons, obviously, why Saskatoon won this event."
In addition to giving hockey fans something to cheer about, the Memorial Cup is expected to bring in $19 million in economic spinoffs for the City of Saskatoon.
The 2013 Memorial Cup will be held in Saskatoon from May 17 to 26. The tournament was last held in Saskatoon in 1989.
