As part of an effort to raise funds to build a new arena, Assiniboia, Sask., is host to Hockey Day in Saskatchewan.
Activities started Friday and are happening all weekend at the town 105 kilometres southwest of Moose Jaw, including six hockey games on Saturday, which is the actual Hockey Day in Saskatchewan.
Organizer Mike Kress said the town is raising money to replace the current rink, which started out as a grain storage facility in 1956.
"The local farmers got together and part of the way for paying for the Civic Centre at that time was to use it for grain storage and stuff for the first few years," Kress told CBC Saturday morning.
Kress said the arena is a hub of activity in the town of 2,300 people, but it will need a lot of maintenance and upgrades in the next few years and they do not feel it is worth the expense.
As for the new arena they hope to build, Kress said he thinks the town raised about $40,000 at Friday's night dinner and silent auction.
The annual event is sponsored by SaskEnergy.
