Saskatoon police have ticketed a 56-year-old man who ended up in the hospital after being hit by a bus Thursday night.

He's the latest pedestrian in that city to find out you don't necessarily get a free pass from the police if you get hurt while violating traffic rules.

The injury happened around 9 p.m. CST at the corner of 1st Avenue and 23rd Street.

The man was trying to cross the street against a red light and ran into the path of a city bus, police said.

The bus driver hit the brakes, but the roads were slippery and the bus slid and hit the man.

An ambulance took the man to hospital with injuries police described as non-life-threatening.

The man has been charged with entering an intersection against a red light, contrary to section 235(3)(c) of the Traffic Safety Act.

In recent years, Saskatoon police have charged a number of other pedestrians after they walked into traffic and were struck by vehicles.

Last January, a 14-year-old boy who was hit by a car after trying to cross the street mid-block was ticketed. In June, 2011, a 50-year-old woman who was hit by a car and injured her leg while crossing mid-block was charged.

Saskatoon police say the fines vary. If someone is ticketed for jaywalking, the fine is $40 (early payment $20) under the Municipal Traffic Bylaw.

If the person crosses against a red light, the fine under the Traffic Safety Act is $70.
