The government of Saskatchewan is replacing the iconic wheat sheaf (left) with this new logo (right) on its news releases.
The government of Saskatchewan has quietly replaced the iconic wheat sheaf logo on its news releases.
Ditching the sheaf is something the Saskatchewan Party tried to do when it was first elected five years ago. It said the 1970s logo was outdated and not representative of the "new Saskatchewan." A public backlash had the government change its mind.
Terri Harris, chief of operations for the Premier, said the provincial government felt a change was overdue.
"Frankly the ochre brown colour maybe doesn't necessarily reflect the new vibrancy in Saskatchewan," Harris said. "So we've got updated colours, but a logo that reflects movement and colour and action."
Harris said the government has no plans to remove the wheat sheaf from signs or buildings.
"The wheat sheaf remains an official emblem," Harris said. "This is not changing something that's a very traditional, respected emblem for the province and something people identify with."
