RCMP say motorists should not venture out tonight, due to dangerous highway conditions.
Road conditions, they say, are bad and getting worse.
"Rain earlier in the day is now producing icy conditions on most highways in the south of the province," police warned in a news release Wednesday afternoon.
They said officers are already busy with calls to traffic accidents, due to the conditions.
Unnecessary travel is not recommended.
Around 5:30 p.m., RCMP reported that Highway 6, north of Regina near Southey, was blocked by a jackknifed semi. That made traffic through the area next to impossible for a few hours. Around 8 p.m. RCMP said the route was unblocked and traffic could get through, although it was slow going and road conditions were still very poor.
It was also tough going along Highway 11, west of Regina, as heavy wet snow hit the area Wednesday afternoon.
The weather office issued a number of advisories and warnings Wednesday relating to freezing rain and heavy snow.
The area most affected extends from Regina to the Yorkton region, where freezing rain was expected to change to snow by early Wednesday night.
The temperature was also forecast to fall below the freezing mark, which would lead to significant icing of roads, making driving conditions extremely treacherous.
North of that area, people could expect heavy snow, generally in the vicinity of the Yellowhead Highway between Yorkton and Wynyard, with about 10-15 centimetres of snow forecast for parts of the Kamsack and Humboldt areas.
To add to the travel woes, the weather office said there are patches of fog over much of the south of the province, reducing visibility at times.
