A Saskatoon city councillor wants to step up enforcement of the snow clearing bylaw.

After a storm, many businesses are supposed to get 24 hours to clear their sidewalks, while private homes get two days.

But Coun. Pat Lorje says hardly anyone takes that law seriously.

"People have had more than ample opportunity to be aware that we do have a snow clearing bylaw with respect to sidewalks," she said. "I think you could drive almost anywhere in this city and find it's honoured more in the breach than the observance."

In residential areas, the city only hands out tickets for not shoveling snow if it gets complaints.

Lorje has asked officials to look at stricter enforcement.
