The Saskatchewan community of Warman is no longer a town, but a city, and residents are celebrating the change.

Warman, located 20 kilometres north of Saskatoon, officially made the transition to city status on Wednesday, but celebrations were held over the weekend.

"It's just bringing more business, more people, more pride [into] the community, and that's what Warman's all about," said Sandy Klassen, who has lived in Warman since 1982.

The community of more than 7,000 people becomes the 16th municipality in Saskatchewan to hold city status.

Warman was established as a village in 1906 and was incorporated as a town in 1966.

"It's been a long time coming, as you can hear from our history," Mayor Sheryl Spence said Saturday.

"I think it's the next step for Warman and I think lots of good things [are] in our future."

To attain city status, a community has to have a population of at least 5,000 people.

Warman is home to 7,084 residents according to the latest census, conducted last year.

"Warman attaining city status is a great example of how our province is growing and prospering," Premier Brad Wall said in a release.

"Like many communities in Saskatchewan, Warman got its start as a railroad community and has a rich history dating back more than 100 years. We are pleased to celebrate its induction as Saskatchewan's newest city."
