Olymel, a major food company from Quebec, has put in a bid of $65 million to buy Big Sky Farms, a struggling Saskatchewan-based hog-raising operator.
Big Sky has hog barns across the Prairies and is currently experiencing financial problems.
Olymel is already a buyer of hogs from Big Sky. The purchase offer would ensure it maintains a supply of animals for its needs.
Other companies have until next month to put in competing offers.
