Seventeen people from Saskatchewan have been recognized with national awards for bravery.

Lt.-Gov. Vaughn Solomon Schofield presented the Royal Canadian Humane Association Bravery Awards on Monday.

The awards were given to individuals, both police and civilians, who showed courage in the face of danger when trying to save someone's life.

Among those honoured was Janelle Tarrant of Regina, who helped save a three-year-old boy who was trapped underwater by an all-terrain vehicle near Hudson Bay, Sask., on May 9.

Tarrant, a second-year nursing student, resuscitated the unconscious boy before driving him to hospital.

"By this time, though, he was breathing sporadically on his own and crying, which was the best sound in the world — to hear him cry — because he didn't look pretty good. And he's completely fine now," Tarrant told CBC News at Monday's ceremony.

Tarrant received an honorary testimonial certificate from the association.

"I think about it, like, at least a couple times a week, and just all of a sudden I'll stop and start thinking about what happened," she said.

"It could have gone completely the other way, so we got pretty lucky."

Silver and bronze medals were awarded to some of the recipients, who were shown to have risked their lives to save others.
