An 83-year-old woman who was assaulted outside the Saskatoon police station in September has died.

The woman died in hospital on Saturday, almost a month after the attack took place on Sept. 16, police said in a release Monday.

According to police, a 38-year-old woman entered the Saskatoon Police Service's headquarters on Fourth Avenue late in the afternoon on Sept. 16 and exclaimed that she had attacked somebody outside.

Officers found the injured senior on the sidewalk nearby. She was taken to hospital with injuries that police described at the time as serious but not life-threatening.

Witnesses told police that the 83-year-old woman was walking on Fourth Avenue when the younger woman pushed her to the ground and kicked her.

The two women did not know each other, according to police.

The 38-year-old woman was arrested at that time and charged with aggravated assault. She was also charged with assaulting a peace officer, after she allegedly started kicking a male officer while she was being detained and booked.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in provincial court on Tuesday.

An autopsy, scheduled for later this week, will help determine if any new charges will be laid, according to police.

Police say they would not release the deceased woman's name at the request of her family.
