A planned new stadium in Regina could yet be voted on, if a petition gathers enough names to force a vote. (City of Regina)
People looking to gather names on a petition to force a vote on plans for a new football stadium in Regina are expected to set up at Mosaic Stadium this weekend.
The group says they will be at Mosaic Stadium starting at 7 p.m. CST Friday, and remain there through the scheduled Saskatchewan Roughriders football game Saturday night and into Sunday morning.
The business manager for the team, Rod Guy, said Friday the club is not calling for extra security.
"From what we understand, they'll be trying to collect some names to put on petitions and such," Guy said.
He added there are city bylaw enforcement officers who can deal with any issues, if any arise during the event.
The petition project was mounted by Dawn Thomas, who is seeking election to Regina city council.
"This is not a protest per say", Thomas said in a news release, "but a peaceful demonstration and petition signing event showing our community's solidarity in our disappointment that the democratic process here in Regina has failed."
She went on to say the point of the petition was to get the city to consult citizens.
"This is not anti-stadium," she said. "It is time for the citizens of this city to have a say, and there are so many better options than the current plan."
