Heavy mist was blowing across Regina's Wascana Lake early Monday morning. The temperature in that city dropped to 1.5 C. overnight. (CBC)
There were some record-setting cold temperatures around the province last night — and for farmers, likely some anxious moments.
The cold spot before midnight was Southend, north of the grain belt, where the mercury dipped to a record -2.9 degrees. Six communities set record lows for Sept. 16.
The towns, low temperatures, and previous records for the day are:
- Assiniboia, 1.0 C (1.3, 2003)
- Elbow, -0.5 (0.0, 1973)
- Lucky Lake, -1.4 (-1.3, 2003)
- Southend, -2.9 (-1.8, 1993)
- Spiritwood,-1.9 (-0.5, 2010)
- Wynyard, -1.1 (1.1, 2010)
Another nine communities experienced zero or sub-zero temperatures before midnight.
It was nippy in Regina and Saskatoon, too. Lows in those cities were 1.5 and 0.2 respectively.
With millions of acres yet to be harvested, frost is an ongoing concern for some farmers. However, more than half the crop is already in the bin, according to the Saskatchewan Agriculture Ministry.
Overnight lows around Saskatchewan are expected to be somewhat higher tonight, according to Environment Canada.
