With just a few days to officially commit to the contest, the field of candidates for mayor in Saskatchewan's four largest cities is filling up.
The nomination deadline for the fall municipal elections is Sept. 19.
Voting day is Oct. 24.
Here is a snap-shot of the contenders, so far:
Regina:
As of Friday, Regina has seven mayoral hopefuls who have completed the nomination process and two others who have announced they are running for mayor. Current mayor Pat Fiacco said in February that he is not seeking another term on council.
In the running:
- Tom Brown, retired.
- Tim Siekawitch, an engineer assistant.
- Jim Elliott, an environmental education consultant.
- Chad Novak, a certified management accountant (was in the race, then bowed out, and is now officially back).
- Michael Fougere, current member of city council and president of the Saskatchewan Construction Association.
- Marian Donnelly, business and management professional.
- Liz Brass, a psychologist and business professional.
- Charles Wiebe, transit bus operator (has said he is in the race).
- Meka Okochi, economic development professional (has said he is in the race).
Saskatoon:
Earlier this week, former Saskatoon mayor Henry Dayday announced he was ending his bid for a return to city council. Dayday claimed he was leaving for strategic reasons. He said he did not want to split any anti-incumbent votes.
In the running:
- Don Atchison, a business professional, is the incumbent mayor seeking another term on council.
- Tom Wolf, a professional researcher and policy analyst.
- Clay Mazurkewich, a consultant.
Prince Albert:
In the running:
- Jim Scarrow is seeking another term as mayor.
- Greg Dionne, a current city council member.
- Dean Link, a real estate professional.
Moose Jaw:
The current mayor of Moose Jaw, Glenn Hagel, is not seeking another term. Hagel was a former provincial NDP politician and cabinet minister.
In the running:
- Deb Higgins, a former NDP provincial cabinet minister.
- Fraser Tolmie, a current member of city council (has said he is in the race).
Corrections and Clarifications
- Candidates who have completed official nomination forms as of Friday were noted. Others have announced they are in the race but had not yet filed their forms. A previous version of the story failed to note Fraser Tolmie's intentions in Moose Jaw. Sept. 15 | 12:30 p.m. CST
