An inmate at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre has been found dead in his cell.

The death was discovered at 7 a.m. CST Thursday morning, during a regular bed check, according to corrections spokeswoman Judy Orthner.

The 28-year-old man, identified by police as Elvis Percy Yee and also known as Elvis Percy Lachance, arrived at the jail Wednesday to be remanded after being charged with breaking and entering and breach of probation.

Orthner said staff at the jail concluded that the inmate did not die from natural causes. As a result, the Saskatoon Police Service's major crimes unit is investigating.

On Thursday afternoon, police said they considered the man's death was suspicious. They said the cause of death would be released once an autopsy was done.

Officials also said the man had been placed in a cell with another inmate, in a practice known as double-bunking.

The correctional centre is locked down until further notice and visitor access will be limited until the lockdown is lifted, the province said.
