During the Labour Day long weekend the RCMP set up several patrols on highways around central Saskatchewan, which resulted in 660 charges against drivers.

Police said the goal of the operation was to reduce fatal highway collision by cracking down on speeding and cell phone use.

Two of the charges laid were for impaired driving and another for a large seizure of illegal alcohol.

In two separate incidents two drivers were charged and had their cars impounded for driving faster than 165 kilometres an hour on the highway.

In total 10 drivers had their vehicles taken away by police for driving dangerously.

Police said despite their efforts several fatal accidents occurred over the long weekend.

On Friday a motorcyclist was killed in a crash on Highway 11 near Duck Lake, another crash near Turtle Lake left one man dead and Saturday evening two people died in a collision on Highway 355 east of Sturgeon Lake.
